We work to uplift underserved communities by expanding access to resources, support, and opportunities that strengthen individuals, families, and the future of our community.
The Somali American Council of Oregon (SACOO) has supported and advocated for the Somali community in Oregon since its founding in 2011 by Musse Olol. The organization was created to respond to community needs through immigration support, education, and social justice initiatives. SACOO strengthens families, empowers youth, and builds community connection through culturally responsive programs. During the COVID-19 pandemic, SACOO played a critical role by providing resources, outreach, and direct support to community members. Today SACOO continues to grow its impact and is recognized for its commitment to uplifting and serving Somali Americans across Oregon.

Musse Olol is the Founder of the Somali American Council of Oregon and a longtime advocate for immigrant and refugee communities.
The unique story behind our logo
Created in 2011 by Amin Amir, the SACOO logo represents that we are Somali Americans, shown by the Somali and American flags together. The green branches symbolize peace. The gold barkin (traditional Somali headrest) honors Somali heritage and has been used by camel herders for over 4,000 years to keep their hair off the ground while resting.
